The Statue was presented to America by the people of France on July 4, 1884. In 1885 it was dismantled and transported to the USA in 350 parts by a French frigate Isere. The monument is approx. 152 ft high (from base to the torch) and wieghs 225 tons (mostly steel and copper). The Statue of Liberty was closed to visitors following September 11, 2001, but Liberty Island was reopened on December 20, 2001. The promenade was reopened to visitors beginning August 3, 2004 by reserved ticket only.
